Exercise Physiology

An Exercise Physiologist (EP) is not a physiotherapist or a personal trainer. An EP is an allied health professional that specialises in exercise and movement for the prevention and management of chronic diseases and injuries. Most importantly, they help people move and exercise their way to a healthier lifestyle.

Our EPs are fully accredited with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) and can provide support for clients with musculoskeletal injuries and conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, mental health problems, cancer, arthritis, pulmonary disease and more.

A consultation can assist with:

  • Overcoming persistent pain caused by injury or overuse

  • Improving your heart health

  • Rehabilitation following a cardiac event

  • Controlling your diabetes

  • Prevent pre-diabetes from progressing to full diabetes

  • Improve your recovery following cancer treatment

  • Improve your general health and well being

  • Rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries sub-acute or chronic, including, but not limited to arthritis (osteo and rheumatoid), osteopenia and osteoporosis

  • Orthopaedic prehabilitation and sub acute rehabilitation

Accredited EPs are registered with Medicare Australia, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, WorkCover and most private health insurers.

Chronic Disease Management

Some clients may be able to receive assistance from Medicare under the Chronic Disease Management (CDM) program, formerly known as the Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) program. A chronic disease is defined as one that has been or is likely to be present for 6 months or longer. Some examples include:

  • Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes

  • Obesity/Overweight

  • Arthritis

  • Heart Disease

  • Hypertension

  • Osteoporosis

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Hypercholesterolaemia/Dyslipidaemia

  • Asthma

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

  • Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

  • Cancer

  • Cardiovascular Disease

  • Musculoskeletal Injuries

  • Occupational Injuries

  • Back, neck, shoulder, knee pain and more!

If you can relate to any of these examples and believe you would benefit from Canberra Soft Tissue Therapy’s Exercise Physiology services, speak with your doctor as you may qualify for a CDM plan. Your doctor will then provide you with a referral which you can bring with you on your first visit. Further details on Chronic Disease Management can be found on the Medicare website.
